Book title: The one and only Ivan
Blurb: Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living in a shopping mall he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact he hardly thinks about it all. Instead Ivan thinks about the TV shows he's seen, his friends Stella and Bob and painting. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home- and his art- through new eyes. When ruby arrives change comes with her and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
Recommended for: All animal lovers (and non-animal lovers so you become an animal lover) but quite sad and difficult to understand so I would not recommended for people under the age of 9.
What it's about:
Ivan is the sad story of a Gorilla living in captivity (as part of a mall circus), However Ivan isn't sad or depressed (much). It's his friend Stella who is, having lived in captivity since she was a baby (elephant). Stella is very old and when she hurts her leg and becomes very sick, she makes Ivan promise to help Ruby, (the new baby elephant living with them) so she won't end up the same as Stella, living her whole life in a small domain doing circus shows. Now it's up to Ivan to keep his promise...
One day this book will be a classic (maybe it already is). It really helps people understand how animals in captivity feel and has an awesome plot.
Rating 9.5/10 (phenomenal read but could have had a bit more backstory (it already has quite a bit) to it.
