Book title: Auggie and me (sequel of wonder)
Author: R.J Palacio
Blurb: Julian has always felt uncomfortable around Auggie- but a summer spent with his grandmother in paris makes Julian see Auggie with new eyes.
Christopher is auggie's oldest friend- and knows better than most that being part of Auggie's life comes with it's challenges. Charlotte has always been nice to Auggie but in a year of torn loyalties and damaged feelings, is being nice really enough?
Now read a new side to the wonder story from 3 characters whose lives have been changed by Auggie forever.
Recommended for: (pretty much all ages , if you liked wonder, you will definitely enjoy this book.
Note: I had very high expectations for this book but luckily didn't disappoint.
There's an introduction at the beginning about how Palacio had never planned to write a sequel (and why). He also explains why he ended up writing a sequel (but not going forward in time). The reason was: The 3 characters had their own important story to tell, but it didn't go along with the main storyline(s) of wonder, so it didn't get a place in the book.
For those who have not read my review of wonder (or read the actual book wonder) Auggie is
a 10 year old boy, who is quite deformed (born that way), he went to a real school for the first time in grade 5 and changed many people's lives. Definitely read wonder first before reading this book.
what it's about:
This book has 3 short (separate)stories about 3 characters from the world of wonder, The first has a lot about Auggie. The second, also quite a bit and the final, not so much.
The 1st (The Julian Chapter) is about Julian, the cruel, mean bully who is awful to Auggie and Jack. This chapter goes into some of the conflict his parents have with the school board, how Julian ends up leaving Beecher Prep (the school), why he bullies auggie, and how his grandma helps Julian solve his problem (guilt, fear) of Auggie.
The next story (Pluto) is about Christopher, Auggie's best friend (who moved away). The story takes you through an awful/sad but ok in the end day in Christopher's life. He shouts at his mom, Has an awful day at school and his mom has an accident. Throughout the day Christopher relives good times with Auggie and some of the many challenges of being Auggie's friend, at the end of the day Christopher is in dismay as he needs to study for a test and it's almost 11pm. Who does he call to help him?
The final story (Shingaling) and the one with the least about Auggie in it is about Charlotte, and mostly girl drama during "the war" and how Charlotte, Ximena and Summer become great friends after being picked to perform in an important dance together, It's also about how Ellie joined the "popular" group and doesn't hang out with Charlotte anymore. It is very different from any other chapter in the world of Wonder and that makes it all the more special.
Rating: 9.7/10 (Could have been better if the chapters were longer and/or there was another chapter, there are still so many interesting stories in the world of wonder.) It was a great read!
